What is the difference between LASIK and PRK:
In LASIK, Dr. van Aswegen will make an incision in the cornea to create a flap of tissue. The flap of tissue is lifted so the laser can be applied to reshape the inner layers of the cornea. The corneal flap is then put back in place and heals over the reshaped part of the cornea in a few days.
In PRK, no flap is created in the cornea. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is removed to expose an area for a laser to reshape. This makes PRK a better choice for people whose eyes meet certain criteria, such as having thin corneas or chronically dry eyes.
The most significant differences between PRK and LASIK are the initial discomfort and the speed of visual recovery. Recovery from PRK takes a little longer than from LASIK because the outer layer of the cornea needs time to heal.
What is the success rate of laser eye surgery?
96% of patients achieve 20/20 vision or better (according to the American Society of Cataract and refractive surgery)
When will I start seeing an improvement in my vision?
For LASIK it can be as soos as the day of the procedure (within a few hours).
PRK can take 4 to 7 days since the outer layer of the cornea needs time to heal.
Is LASIK or PRK painful?
You won't feel pain during either of the procedures since the eye is numbed with an anaesthetic drop. LASIK patients might report only a mild discomfort after surgery since the laser done underneath a corneal flap.
Since PRK is done directly on the cornea the patient will experience more discomfort after surgery.
Both procedures deliver excellent results.
How old do you have to be to qualify for laser eye surgery?
Older than 21 with a stable prescription.
When may I resume driving?
As soon as Dr. van Aswegen has checked that your vision is good enough. For most LASIK patients it is within a day or 2. PRK may take slightly longer (4-7 days)
When can I start wearing make-up?
You can start wearing make-up one week after surgery. Be sure to use good quality, clean products and brushes as to reduce the risk of infection.
